Bogart’s Young Artists
As the name suggests, this series of occasional concerts offers young musicians the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to an interested public and thereby gain experience in appearing on stage. For just €5 (discounted €2.50) people can enjoy a concert and at the same time do something to support young musicians. Bogart’s Jazz Club hopes to be able to make this a regular feature.
The first young musicians’ concert was on 3 April with the Fedde S. Big Band from Heerenveen in the Dutch province of Friesland. The average age of the thirty band members was 16. This school band is named after the Frisian poet Fedde Schurer. These young big band enthusiasts brought along in their luggage numbers from Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Antonio Jobim. A strong rhythm section, “oversized” brass and sax sections and three charming young lady singers provided plenty of power for a great atmosphere.

It’s amazing what a sound bandleader Hans Klaver has achieved with these boys and girls, some of whom have only been with the band for half a year. The overwhelmingly young audience literally went wild it was the first time in the existence of the club “Ursprung” that the chairs and tables seemed to be in the way! This final concert and the highlight of the young band’s tour also marked the beginning of Bogart’s concert series for young musicians.
